The Irondale Commercial Development Authority (CDA) recently hosted a special luncheon to present Irondale based company, Gus’ Hotdogs with their prestigious, Business of the Month award for September. Each month the Irondale CDA recognizes an Irondale business that exemplifies both industry excellence and a commitment to community collaboration.
In attendance for the presentation were Irondale CDA Board Members Aaron Sims, David Pugh, David Rawson and Board Chairman Darryl Washington.
While dining over a few of Gus’ Hotdog Specials, Owner John Joseph Musso discussed his humble beginning with the board members. Gus’ has been a staple of the Irondale community for 26 years, with John owning the business for 16 of those years. John, a 1991 graduate of University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), had a previous background in sales for 9 years. During this time in sales John traveled to various small cities and ate at little quaint eateries like Gus’. While eating John would always think about how nice it would be to own his own restaurant.
One night after a trip to Walmart with his wife Jan, John rode by Gus’. Gus’ was closed and he told Jan, “If this place ever goes up for sale, I’m going to buy it.” Well, Gus’ went up for sale and John’s mother-in-law heard it was for sale and called his wife to let her know that it was on the market. And the rest is history!
According to Darryl Washington, Irondale CDA chairman, Gus’ Hotdogs is truly a historical staple for Irondale. There should be more business owners in the city of Irondale like John Musso and his family.
Thanks John for the great customer service and family atmosphere!
